Many of our Christmas customs came from early festivals which had nothing to do with the Christian church. Long ago people had mid-winter festivals, they believed this would give the sun back its power. In the Roman festival of Saturnalia about 25th of Dec. They decorated homes with evergreens to remind them of Saturn, their Harvest God. Some of these traditions were used by early Christians as part of the celebrations of Jesus birthday It was in Victorian times new ideas such as Father Christmas, Christmas cards and crackers were added.
